The NFHR has an independent evaluation program for its horses. Horses are evaluated in hand for conformation. Performance evaluations are also offered (at Introductory and Advanced levels) in three disciplines; Riding (English or Western), Driving and Draft. Although optional, evaluations are strongly encouraged, especially for breeding stock. Evaluation results are published in the Evaluation Record Book, which is currently available in two volumes (1994-2000 and 2001-2004). Record Books can be purchased in the NFHR Marketplace.

The registry has developed an evaluation handbook for those interested in participating in an evaluation. The handbook is downloadable as a pdf in three sections:
Section I and II include an overview of the evaluation process, rules for conformation and performance evaluations, and the score sheet for the conformation evaluation;
Section III includes the breed standard; and
Section IV includes the descriptions, patterns, and score sheets for the performance evaluations.
